Nestled in the Inyo Mountains east of Big Pine, California, a growing customer base is receiving free service from Southern California Edison. But this population is four-legged.
They're mule deer. And five years ago, their only source for drinking water was a single natural spring in the area, making it a perfect hunting ground for local mountain lions. However, SCE retiree Dick Noles approached several SCE organizations to fund drinking systems, called guzzlers, for installation in remote, arid areas. And support, donations, equipment and supplies came pouring in, so to speak.
To date, nine guzzlers are in place in Inyo and Mono Counties, with the happy result of a marked increase in mule deer fawns and other animals indiginous to the area. According to Dave Dormire, operation and maintenance manager of SCE's Eastern Hydro Region, "Dick Noles and his crew… have made a valuable contribution to the local environment and to the community." To this local hero we say, thank you. And to the mule deer - cheers!
