The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) was established in 1987 as a national, teacher-led organization to develop standards and certify teachers who meet accomplished teaching standards. NBPTS is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nongovernmental organization governed by a 54-member board of directors, the majority of whom are classroom teachers. The other directors include school administrators, school board leaders, governors, state legislators, higher education officials, and business and community leaders. Today, there are more than 40,000 National Board Certified Teachers® (NBCTs) and these highly qualified, accomplished teachers are having a tremendous impact on students every day in schools across the nation. As of November 2005, California boasts 3,397 NBCTs.
The National Board Certification® process is a voluntary, yearlong assessment of actual teaching practice. Standards have been developed that describe the knowledge and skills characterizing accomplished teaching practice in 24 certificate areas. Based upon these high and rigorous standards, multi-part assessments (portfolio of teaching practice and a series of content-based exercises) are used to identify and certify NBCTs. Candidates for National Board Certification often spend between 200 and 400 hours on certification-related projects in addition to their regular classroom work.
